The Dinosaur Game — also known as Chrome Dino or T-Rex Runner — was created by Google engineers Sebastien Gabriel, Alan Bettes, and Edward Jung in 2014. The goal was simple: to turn the “No Internet” error page into something fun and interactive instead of just frustrating.
Inspired by Chrome’s mascot dinosaur, the developers built a small endless runner game that activates automatically whenever users lose connection. Instead of staring at an error message, players could now guide a dinosaur through a desert landscape filled with obstacles like cacti and flying pterodactyls.
What began as a quirky Easter egg quickly became a global phenomenon, with billions of plays recorded across the world — both offline and online.
Playing the Dinosaur Game couldn’t be easier. When your device loses internet connection, you’ll see the Chrome error page with a little dinosaur above the message “No Internet.” Simply press the space bar (or tap on mobile) to start running.
From there, your only task is to jump over obstacles or duck under flying creatures. The game speeds up gradually, testing your reflexes and concentration as your score climbs higher. The controls are minimal:
Space bar / Tap – Jump
Down Arrow / Swipe Down – Duck (on mobile)
There’s no ending, no levels, and no victory screen. The T-Rex just keeps running until you crash into a cactus — a metaphor, perhaps, for the endless cycle of trying to reconnect to the internet.
